 Manager, Tongass Forest Campaign

IMG_20160709_194027655.jpgThe Southeast Alaska Conservation Council is hiring for a Tongass Forest Campaign Manager (“campaigner”) to oversee our work to protect the integrity of the Tongass National Forest, America’s largest, and the largest intact temperate forest in the world.

Job Description: The Tongass Forest Campaign Manager is responsible for overseeing all of the forest and forestry-related campaign work at SEACC, including campaign planning, partnership development and management, grassroots organizing, volunteer participation, strategic event coordination, liaising with state and federal government, and building relationships with Native community and local leaders, the Forest Service, and other ENGOs. Experience with project or campaign management, and background in forestry, forest ecology, management or economics are desirable for this role.

The Tongass Forest Campaign Manager will lead SEACC’s Forest Campaigns program, including working with the Executive Director to develop our strategy to address export of unprocessed old-growth round logs, and to expedite our work to end old-growth clearcut logging in Southeast Alaska. She/He will also play a role in organizing against threats to Tongass wildlands including damaging timber sales, compromising legislation, and other projects that could compromise the Tongass.

The Tongass Forest Campaigner will ultimately be responsible for campaign outcomes on the Tongass Forest land-base, but will work in conjunction with SEACC’s E.D., Staff Scientist, Grassroots Attorney, and the Communications and Engagement coordinator, as needed. This position reports to the E.D.

The successful candidate for campaigner will be a friendly and engaging self-starter, creative strategist, and passionate about forests and forest conservation. SEACC is a small, regional nonprofit operating in what resembles a busy start-up environment, so an ideal candidate will thrive on keeping a cool head while managing multiple projects at once. The campaigner role offers the opportunity both to dig in on the policy side of forest management and also regularly travel by ferry or plane to communities spread across the islands of the Southeast Alaska Archipelago to organize support for campaign objectives. Experience coordinating volunteers or interns will be beneficial, as will experience working in support of or with Native communities in northern regions. Background using or doing outreach or advertising on social media is a bonus, as is experience writing and issuing press releases, or doing media interviews.

SEACC is a small but mighty legacy nonprofit nestled amongst the Tongass National Forest in Juneau, Alaska. Our growing, 6-person office is a cozy former residence in downtown Juneau, a short walk from downtown amenities. The greater Juneau region is rich with access to the outdoors, including fishing, hunting, foraging and subsistence activities, and skiing and winter sports in the wintertime. The city is famous for its rainy and dark winters (pre-ski-season), which is a consideration for those contemplating a relocation. SEACC’s compensation package is consistent with those of small, regional nonprofits. A small relocation benefit may be negotiable for those relocating from outside of Southeast Alaska.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of professional experience, including work or study in or related to Forestry, Forest Management, or Forest Conservation
  • Campaign or Project Management experience
  • Ability to coordinate and advance multiple projects concurrently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience coordinating or managing volunteers or interns
  • Comfort doing outreach with a wide variety of stakeholders – phone-calling, emailing, in-person meetings
  • Willingness to travel throughout Southeast Alaska to meet with supporters and work with stakeholders

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strategic planning
  • Experience doing outreach through and advertising using social media, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
  • Background in communications, including writing and issuing press releases, and working with the media

Applications should be submitted by October 31st 2016, but will be considered on a rolling basis beginning October 15th. Please submit a cover letter, resume, three references, and a short writing sample or excerpt (less than five pages; a single page is fine) that emphasizes public outreach and engagement, press work or communications, or forest-related background and conversance.

Submit applications or direct any questions to our Office & Operations Manager, Thomasina Andersen, at [email protected], or call (907) 586-6942 for more information.
